Best Family-Friendly Hotels in Amsterdam

by Maja Świątnicka

Travelling with kids is not as easy as solo-traveling with a backpack. A hotel you choose for your family should usually meet more requirements than usual. No matter what’s the purpose of your visit in Amsterdam – sightseeing, boating on the canals or riding bikes through Amsterdam – you need a comfortable and fun place to stay. In my opinion, this is where the location is key. Here’s a list of Amsterdam’s hotels with comfy family options. All properties are conveniently situated, close to main tourist spots, restaurants, supermarkets, and public transportation.

The hotel is located in the Zuidoost district, quite far from the center of Amsterdam, but the access to main city landmarks is very simple – the metro station is around the corner. The Amsterdam Arena is 1.3 km away. The airport is 13 km away. No problem if you travel by your own car – there is the hotel’s own parking (paid though). Hotel Levell is modern and new – it was built in 2017. There are seven floors, almost a hundred rooms in total. The hotel is 100% non-smoking. For on-site recreation, there’s a bike rental.

What You Pay For

The quadruple room is for 4 adults at the maximum. It has 4 single beds. The chicly designed rooms have private bathrooms with showers and free toiletries, and also a wardrobe. As a coffee lover, I like the Nespresso machine in each room and a refrigerator. Some of the rooms are soundproof. You can buy an optional breakfast for 15 Euro per person.

Stayokay is one of the Amsterdam’s hotels under the same name. This particular one is beautifully located in the middle of lovely Vondelpark. You can reach the most famous museums in around 8 minutes walking. There are several trams and buses nearby so reaching the city center is a snap. The hotel offers a stunning view of the green surrounding. Location makes the hotel a great option for families – Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark is close to the center of the city but at the same time close to chilling, relaxing green neighborhood. At the reception, you can get discounts on museum tickets, canal tours, Madame Tussauds etc. The hotel also offers a free walking tour and a bike rental.

What You Pay For

The maximum number of people at 1 quadruple room is 4. Rooms include bunk beds. All rooms have a bathroom and a lockable cupboard. A big minus for towels – they are not included which might be hard while travelling with children. However, you can purchase towels for 4.50 Euro at the reception if you don’t want to bring your own. Breakfast is optional, it costs 7 Euro per person. I must say, the breakfast at Stayokay is really decent, even if it’s still a typical Dutch cuisine.

You can also reach the historic old town by bike in as little as 15 minutes. On top of standard family amenities, Meininger Hotel offers Gamezone and Kidszone where your kids may have fun while you’re relaxing. The White Tulip is actually a hostel but as it’s very often chosen by families, I’ve decided to put it on the list. To me, it’s biggest advantage is location – the hostel is situated in the heart of Amsterdam which makes it a perfect base for further city exploration. It’s key especially when you travel with your family. It’s around a 5-minute walk from Dam Square. You can also reach Central Station, the Flower Market, Madame Tussauds and various museums very quickly and conveniently. Rooms are clean and comfortable. They are 100% non-smoking. There’s also a great terrace when you can spend some nice time chilling, especially in the summer. If you travel with little kids, be aware that because of location, there might be some disturbance during the night.

What You Pay For

The price is relatively high for a quadruple room with shared bedroom. The maximum number of people is 4. There are four single beds in each family room. You can optionally buy a breakfast. It costs 5 Euro per person. It’s served in the traditional Slainte Irish Pub. Guests of The White Tulip are entitled to get a 15% discount on all meals. Another hotel with a perfect location – right in the city center, around 350 meters from Dam Square and only 100 meters from the Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk shopping area. You can reach Central Station in 5 minutes on foot. Location makes the hotel great for walking and sightseeing. However, be aware that The Red Light District is as little as 50 meters away. The hotel is basic and simple but very cozy at the same time. You and your kids will definitely love the hospitable and generous staff. To me, a car-lover, the lack of parking is a relevant minus though. On the other hand, most tourists come to Amsterdam by plane, don’t they?

What You Pay For

A family room can host up to 5 adults. There are 5 single beds. Rooms include private bathrooms with a shower, a hairdryer and toiletries. Some rooms include carpeting and linens. Breakfast is served at restaurant Marco Polo, around 100 meters away from the hotel. It costs 7.50 Euro per person.

???? 1.7 km to the city center
???? 6.4

Even if the distance from the center is quite big, the location is worth consideration. The hotel is situated opposite the Vondelpark, in a quiet street. You can reach the Leidseplein in 4 minutes on foot. The famous museums (Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum) are within a 7-minute walk. You can go to Central Station by tram from Leidse Square. The hotel itself is a great fun for kids – it’s an 18th-century building, part of the famous ‘United Europe’ buildings. Those are 7 buildings presenting typical building styles of seven European countries.  The hotel is non-smoking but there’s a courtyard where guests can smoke. A cool thing for families is that Quentin England offers its guests some free tickets to museums and other activities. On-site recreation includes bike rental.

What You Pay For

Rooms at Quentin Hotel England are quite modern and well-equipped. The maximum number of people to stay at 1 room is 4. Most of quadruple rooms have private bathrooms but I recommend that you should check it carefully while booking. Rooms have a private balcony and a microwave. You can also buy breakfast for 15 Euro per person. Breakfast is served in the breakfast room.

Hotel De Westertoren

???? Prices start at 180 Euro for a Quadruple Room
???? Raadhuisstraat 35, Amsterdam City Center, 1016 DC Amsterdam
+31 20 624 4639
???? 500 m to the city center
???? 7.7

Hotel De Westertoren has a perfect location. I love Amsterdam’s city-center hotels – this is the only way to deeply dive into the city exploration. This one is a hidden gem in the heart of the city. Dam Square, the canals and the Anne Frank House are around the corner (literally), Central Station is within a 10-minute walk, same is the Red Light District. Underneath Hotel De Westertoren you’ll find an arcade of traditional Dutch restaurants and shops. There is also a tram stop (Spui) 200 meters from the hotel. The hotel has a paid parking.

What You Pay For

A quadruple room is for 4 adults at the maximum. There are four single beds. Some of the rooms have shared toilets. What really matters (at least to me) is that breakfast is included. Cool not to worry about a decent meal in the morning. Usually, toasts, jam, cheese, eggs and yogurt are served. On top of that, each room has coffee and tea facilities. There’s one minus I cannot ignore (but it’s typical for Dutch hotels) – there’s no lift, just steep stairs.

A&o Amsterdam Zuidoost

???? Prices start at 115 Euro for a Family Room
???? Hogehilweg 22, 1101 CD Amsterdam
+31 20 258 9100
???? 8 km from to the city center
???? 7.6

The hotel is located a bit far away from the city center – 8 kilometers. It’s situated 1 km from Amsterdam Arena. Amsterdam RAI is around 6 km from the hotel and the airport – 3 km. The metro station is just around the corner – you can get to Central Station in 15 minutes. A&o was completely renovated in 2015. It’s a non-smoking place. There are some cool family amenities like billiards, a play room for children, pool table, table football and bike rental. You can also spend some quality time in Bijlmerpark nearby – I truly recommend the Kwaku Festiva held every summer.

What You Pay For

A family room is for four people at the maximum  – two adults and two children. There are 2 single beds and 2 bunk beds. All rooms have private bathrooms with a shower. There’s an option to get breakfast at a 8.50-Euro surcharge. There is also a shared kitchen for the hotel guests. The hotel has a parking available at an extra charge.

Summary

Amsterdam is a great place to share experience with your family. There are so many things to see, some historical places and beautiful landmarks. There are some parts you will obviously miss, like the Amsterdam nightlife, but still the city of absolutely worth visiting with kids.  Hope the list of family-friendly hotels above will be helpful for you while choosing the best place to stay. They are in different price ranges but none of them will drain your wallet.
